Description
: The **M163** is a Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft vehicle built on the [M113](/md/rv/vehicles/m113.md) chassis, mounting a **20mm M168** Vulcan-type rotary cannon in an open turret. It entered U.S. service in the 1960s to provide short-range air defense for mechanized units and saw use in Vietnam and later conflicts. The vehicle is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and one passenger — weighs 14 tonnes, and is fully amphibious at 4 km/h. A **6V53** diesel produces 212 horsepower for 15.1 hp/t and a road speed of 64 km/h.
The **20mm M168** is fed from 1,000-round magazines and is aimed with a 6x telescope and a lead-computing sight for engaging aircraft. The lightweight, tracked hull offers minimal armour; survival depends on mobility and the ability to swim water obstacles.
