It introduced a gas-turbine engine, Chobham-style composite armour, and a 105 mm gun; later variants (M1A1, M1A2) switched to 120 mm and added improved electronics and armour. In its baseline form the tank is crewed by four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — on a tracked hull weighing 55.7 tonnes, powered by a **Honeywell AGT1500** turbine producing 1,519 horsepower for 27.3 hp/t and 72 km/h. Main armament is the stabilized **105mm M68A1** with a laser rangefinder, fire control system, and Gen 1 thermals (3x and 9.8x); a coaxial **7.62mm M240**, a commander **12.7mm M2**, and a loader **7.62mm M240** complete the armament. Smoke grenades and an engine smoke system are fitted for defensive screening.
