The [T-62](/md/mtc/vehicles/t-62.md) entered Soviet service in 1961 as the first production tank with a smoothbore gun; the M modernizations in the 1980s extended its service life with improved armour, mobility, and guided missile capability. Operated by a crew of four — driver, gunner, commander, and loader — the 42-tonne tracked vehicle is powered by a **ChTZ V-46-5M** diesel (690 hp, 16.4 hp/t) for a top speed of 50 km/h. The stabilized **115mm U-5TS** is loaded manually and can fire 3BM28 APFSDS, **9M117** ATGM, 3BK15M HEAT, and 3OF11 HE; the gunner has a laser rangefinder, fire control system, 3.5x/6.9x main sight, and a dedicated 8x ATGM sight. A coaxial **7.62mm PKT** and a loader-operated **12.7mm DShK** provide secondary fire; smoke grenades and engine smoke are fitted.
